Shanghai Jiao Tong University Launches Digital Medical Research Institute and Announces Global Talent Recruitment

July 10, 2023

Shanghai, July 8, 2023 - The AI Empowered Sports and Health Summit, a part of the 2023 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC 2023), was held at the Conference Center of Shanghai Dalian Science and Technology Innovation Tower with great fanfare. The forum focused on the digitalization and intelligent development of industries such as sports and health through technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data, and the metaverse.

Chen Yujian, Secretary of the Minhang District Committee, and Zhu Xinyuan, Standing Committee Member of the Party Committee and Vice President of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), attended the conference. They officially launched the construction of the Digital Medical Research Institute (referred to as "the Institute" hereinafter) at the School of Biomedical Engineering of SJTU and announced the global recruitment of talents. The launch also included the establishment of the Artificial Intelligence Technology Center at the Translational Medicine Research Institute of SJTU. The launch of these two AI institutions at SJTU aims to promote the deep cooperation between artificial intelligence and the medical field, accelerate the digitalization and intelligence of life and health, and provide new possibilities for innovative medical technologies and health management.

During the two-day WAIC 2023 Minhang Forum from July 7th to 8th, the Institute, still in its preparatory stage, set up an exhibition booth outside the Minhang Forum venue to showcase a series of achievements. The meticulously arranged exhibition area by the core research team of the Institute attracted the attention of many participants. The achievements on display covered various fields such as brain-machine interface technology, multimodal biomedical big data knowledge inference, and intelligent health monitoring, showcasing the research foundation and innovation capabilities of the Institute at the School of Biomedical Engineering of SJTU. The enthusiastic response from the attending leaders, relevant enterprises, and many participants at the scene demonstrated the strong interest and support for the Institute.

The Institute will fully utilize the comprehensive advantages of SJTU and the Shanghai Institute of Artificial Intelligence in discipline construction, talent cultivation, research results commercialization, and ecosystem development. It is committed to promoting the deep integration of artificial intelligence with translational medicine and clinical research. In the future, taking advantage of large-scale model innovation and focusing on national needs, the Institute will serve the life and health of the people and strive to build a three-dimensional, multi-level, and collaborative medical technology innovation system and core base. With a focus on innovation, the Institute aims to establish a new research paradigm in medical artificial intelligence, create a platform for the research and clinical translation of artificial intelligence, and cultivate a large number of professional and versatile talents for the global medical field. To achieve this goal, the Institute officially launched a global recruitment campaign during the conference, hoping to attract more innovative and capable researchers to contribute to the development of the field of digital medicine.

The research directions of the Digital Medical Research Institute at the School of Biomedical Engineering of SJTU include but are not limited to: the application of artificial intelligence in basic medicine, clinical medicine, public health, and other fields; research and development of medical devices and diagnostic systems based on artificial intelligence technology; medical data analysis, case studies, drug development, and the development of medical large-scale models driven by artificial intelligence technology. Based on these research areas, the Institute will better play its role as a bridge and technology pioneer, mobilize strong collective forces for "organized research," focus on clinical needs, concentrate on technological breakthroughs, and strive to build a highland for interdisciplinary innovation, a platform leading technological transformations, and bring new vitality and development opportunities to the field of digital medicine. With the collective efforts of outstanding talents worldwide, we believe that the Institute will become one of the leading institutions in the field of digital medicine globally and make greater contributions to the cause of human health.
