Igniting Cross‑Disciplinary Inspiration | The Inaugural Medical Engineering Innovation Workshop & Undergraduate Research Open Day Successfully Held
March 18, 2025
To deepen the reform of the "Academic Mentorship System" cultivation model for the Intelligent Medical Engineering Pilot Class and to establish an integrated education system of "Experience – Rotation – Mutual Selection – Cultivation," the School of Biomedical Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University successfully held the inaugural "Medical Engineering Innovation Workshop & Undergraduate Research Open Day" on March 12 at the Wenxuan Medical Building. Under the theme "Smart Toward the Future, Igniting Cross‑Disciplinary Inspiration," the event attracted over 70 undergraduate students.

I. Dean's Message: Youthful Ambition, a Promising Future
Professor Hongen Liao, Dean of the School of Biomedical Engineering, encouraged the students in his opening address with the words, "With youthful ambition, there is great potential ahead." He pointed out that AI and digitalization are reshaping the future of healthcare, and that biomedical engineers must take innovation as their compass and practice as their sail to chart their research course. He encouraged the students: "Experience the allure of scientific research during the Open Day. Let curiosity be your starting point and a sense of mission your driving force, and become the 'star‑gazers' and 'helm‑steerers' of our time."
II. Open Experience: Research Up Close, Free Dialogue
Stepping into the Wenxuan Medical Building, 12 laboratories were transformed into "research‑themed workshops," covering cutting‑edge fields such as minimally invasive intelligent diagnostics and therapy, high‑throughput probe design, medical robotics, and MRI‑guided interventional imaging. Each lab director acted as a "research guide," leading students through immersive experiences of daily research life via face‑to‑face explanations and demonstrative presentations. Students moved between the booths, asking questions, taking notes, and engaging enthusiastically, creating a vibrant atmosphere throughout the venue.
III. Brainstorming: A Research Feast from Theory to Practice
Throughout the event, students showed great enthusiasm and fully engaged in various interactive sessions. In a relaxed, friendly, and inclusive atmosphere, they eagerly shared insights and actively discussed questions. Young scholars shared their experiences in translating "from paper to product," demystifying the path from research to real‑world application, while outstanding senior students recounted their "lab growth stories," helping newcomers ease their anxieties about getting started in research. The sparks of intellectual exchange burst forth like stars, injecting vibrant youthful energy into the field of biomedical engineering.
Beyond the wealth of research knowledge and practical experience they gained, students also received meaningful souvenirs during the interactive sessions, achieving both intellectual and material rewards. The event became an unforgettable and cherished milestone on their academic journey.
The road ahead is long, but with action, we will reach our destination. This event served as a pioneering innovative practice preceding the "Academic Mentorship System," allowing undergraduates to gain early exposure to research pathways through a four‑dimensional integration of "Exhibition – Learning – Creation – Selection." In the future, the School will continue to deepen the reform of the Intelligent Medical Engineering Pilot Class, advance the development of AI‑integrated disciplines, and provide strong support for cultivating globally competitive innovative talents in medical‑engineering integration.
