SJTU BME Innovation Translation Center Open Day Successfully Concluded

On June 20, 2023, the Open Day of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Biomedical Engineering Innovation Translation Center was successfully concluded. Under the theme "Openness · Sharing · Collaboration," the event aimed to facilitate the aggregation of elements across the entire chain of scientific and technological achievement translation, improve the full-chain services of incubation, investment, acceleration, and industrialization, and foster an innovation ecosystem characterized by openness, collaboration, and mutual benefit.

The event was co-hosted by the School of Biomedical Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the Shanghai Baiyi Molecular and Nanomedicine Innovation Translation Center, and co-organized by Ruixi (Shanghai) Medical Technology Co., Ltd. The event attracted the participation and support of over 50 representatives from government agencies, partner institutions, on-campus achievement translation projects, venture capital firms, and other organizations. Attendees included Jianhe Wei, Director of the Achievement Translation Office of the School of Biomedical Engineering at SJTU, and Ms. Chen Jin, Executive Director of the Shanghai Baiyi Molecular and Nanomedicine Innovation Translation Center.

At the event, Jianhe Wei, Director of the Achievement Translation Office of the School of Biomedical Engineering at SJTU, shared insights on the exploration and practice of the School's model for translating scientific and technological achievements in biomedical engineering. Shen Feng, founder of resident company Maien Biotechnology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., introduced the development and industrialization of intelligent single-molecule genetic diagnostic chips. Zheng Chao, co-founder of resident company Dianliang Napu (Shanghai) Biomedicine Technology Co., Ltd., shared the R&D and industrialization of a novel tumor sentinel lymph node tracing technology.

In addition, Ms. Chen Jin, Executive Director of the Shanghai Baiyi Molecular and Nanomedicine Innovation Translation Center, provided a detailed introduction to Baiyi's service capabilities.

The Shanghai Jiao Tong University Biomedical Engineering Innovation Translation Center was established in 2018. It is a professional innovation incubation platform jointly created by three parties: funded by the Xuhui District Government, constructed by the School of Biomedical Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, and managed by the Shanghai Baiyi Molecular and Nanomedicine Innovation Translation Center. The platform brings together professionals from diverse fields including technology transfer, pharmaceutical production quality system management, and laboratory platform management. It pioneered a private non-enterprise vertical specialized operation and management model in the city. In its first phase, the Center focused on molecular and nanomedicine fields such as small-molecule drugs, nanodiagnostic reagents, and stem cell tumor therapy. After five years of development, its second-phase布局 has expanded to cover smart medical devices, medical image processing, and other directions, broadly encompassing the interdisciplinary field of biomedical engineering, and has essentially formed an agglomeration ecosystem for the translation of cutting-edge biomedical achievements. As of the end of 2022, the Center has incubated and served over 30 companies, with 5 companies having graduated. The incubated companies are primarily startups in the biotechnology and medical device industries, with an industry focus rate of 100%. To date, these companies have累计 received RMB 138 million in social investment, with a total valuation exceeding RMB 1.6 billion. They have obtained over 10 medical device registration certificates, secured nearly 100 core patents, and achieved over RMB 60 million in external technology transfers.

"Translating scientific and technological achievements is a crucial link in converting the intellectual resources of universities into productive forces." Organized research in universities is an important form of producing major strategic technologies. This Open Day showcased the fruitful results achieved by the School of Biomedical Engineering in the process of organized scientific and technological achievement translation. As the constructing entity, the School will continue to address major scientific questions, focus on national strategic needs, enhance the Center's capacity for transferring scientific and technological achievements, and strengthen the "innovation–translation–industrialization" chain. By providing full-process, precise, and professional services and resources for the implementation of scientific and technological achievements, the School aims to jointly promote the development of the biomedical and smart healthcare industries.
