The pioneer of medical-industrial crossover, the leaders in healthy China - the 2020 Shanghai Science and Technology Meritorious Award winner and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering Chen Yazhu

May 19, 2020

On the morning of May 19, 2020, the 2019 Shanghai Science and Technology Awards Conference was held at the Shanghai Exhibition Center. The conference grandly commended scientific and technological workers who have made outstanding contributions to Shanghai's science and technology cause and modernization. At the meeting, Shanghai Municipal Party Secretary Li Qiang awarded Chen Yazhu, 84-year-old Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Honorary Dean of the School of Biomedical Engineering of Shanghai Jiaotong University, the Shanghai Science and Technology Meritorious Award. Outstanding contributions made by nationalization and industrialization. People who are familiar with her say that Academician Chen Yazhu was born for science, and she deserves this honor.

Chen Yazhu is a pioneer and leader in the research and development of large-scale non-invasive medical devices in my country. She has created a new direction in the subject of physical therapy for major diseases in China and enjoys a high reputation in the field of international ultrasound therapy. She has two legendary experiences across disciplines in her life.

Chen Yazhu was born in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province in 1936. When she was a child, her family was poor and her father died young. Her mother taught Chen Yazhu to be self-reliant, disciplined, and grateful. When she was in junior high school, the patriotic movement to "resist US aggression and aid Korea" gave Chen Yazhu a profound education. She secretly set her ambition: living alone should enable more people to live better, and to win glory for the motherland when she grows up.

In 1957, 21-year-old Chen Yazhu entered the Department of Electrical Engineering of Shanghai Jiaotong University to study. Chen Yazhu graduated from school in 1962 and entered the high-voltage teaching and research section. In the same year, she joined the Communist Party of China. At this time, Chen Yazhu began her first legendary experience across disciplines. In 1985, the instrument price of 1.2 million US dollars was a huge burden for the country and society. "Developing the Chinese's own stone crusher" aroused the great interest of Chen Yazhu and her teacher Tang Yaozong, and thus ignited the spark in Chen Yazhu's heart-"What do I want to leave for this world"..

"There is nothing difficult in the world for people with will." In the face of huge pressure and the ardent expectations of the patients, they must fight every second, day and night, through thousands of technical research, tens of thousands of engineering experiments and animal experiments to overcome. After a series of technical problems, Shanghai Jiao Tong University kidney stone in vitro pulverizer with domestic intellectual property rights was finally successfully developed. In December 1985, under the auspices of two directors Zhang Yuanfang and Zhang Renan of the Department of Urology, Zhongshan Hospital of Shanghai, the first clinical trial was successful. Although it was the mid-winter season, Academician Chen in the experiment was sweating. During the 20-month scientific research period, there was no ready-made technology and no sufficient financial support. From high-voltage technology to medical health, the "thrilling one" People who can do, dare to do, and make things are far more than feelings, but more of a sense of responsibility, a sense of responsibility, and the mission of the nation.

After the lithotripter went into the market, many patients were moved by the team's fighting spirit after learning about the R&D story behind them. They sent letters of thanks and pennants one after another. This made Chen Yazhu's heart full of pride and joy. She deeply realized that all the hard work is worthwhile, and it is the greatest value of life to let more people live healthy and happy lives!

In 1992, Chen Yazhu used her own scientific research funds to set up a project on his own and relied on herself. In less than a year, the results came out. It seems easy for others, but in fact she has entered a completely unknown area. The principle of the previous kidney stone extracorporeal lithotripter is very different from this radio frequency instrument.

Chen Yazhu has developed four generations of hyperthermia instruments, which have been used in 44 hospitals across the country, including Shanghai Zhongshan Hospital, Huashan Hospital, Ruijin Hospital, and completed nearly 10,000 clinical applications within two years. The effect has reached the international advanced level of similar products and is an effective replacement. Imported products from Israel and other countries. The technical achievements passed the appraisal of scientific and technological achievements hosted by the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Medicine and the Shanghai Higher Education Bureau, and won the gold medal of the second Shanghai Science and Technology Fair in 1993 and the second prize of Shanghai Science and Technology Progress in 1994.

Chen Yazhu has been teaching at Shanghai Jiao Tong University for nearly 60 years and has trained more than 10 postdoctoral fellows, more than 40 doctors, and more than 100 masters in biomedical engineering.

In the eyes of her students, Chen Yazhu is not only a knowledgeable teacher, but also a model of life full of "positive energy". Her persistent pursuit of truth-seeking and pragmatism in academic research, her daring to be the first and the courage to take responsibility, the spirit of hard work and perseverance for the country and cause, her entire life is a "legend" in the hearts of students.

Chen Yazhu feels that when teachers teach students, they only maintain the normal teacher-student relationship. Giving care to students and devoting one's own mother's heart should become the vast majority of a teacher's life. She has a metaphor for the relationship between teachers and students: "Teachers and students are like 'water' and 'fish'. You have love for students, and students have affection for you. Think about it, can fish get out of the water in a pool? There are no fish in the pool, so what life is there?"

Today, Academician Chen is still full of energy in her old age. She stands firmly behind the team and devotes herself to dedication and support for young people; in “Healthy China” it has become a national strategy, and “smart medical equipment” has been included in the Shanghai Science and Technology Innovation Center. At the time of the important layout, she is ready at the first line of new medical device research and transformation application, and constantly meets the scientific and technological problems and challenges in the field of human health. After the honor, Academician Chen Yazhu is still the most beautiful scientist who "loves the motherland, cares about the people, rigorously conducts academic studies, pioneers and innovates" and strives to be the first line of healthy China!
