January 10, 2026
On January 9th, the 2026 Shanghai Jiao Tong University International Youth Scholars Forum on Biomedical-Engineering Interdisciplinarity, hosted by the School of Biomedical Engineering (BME), successfully concluded at the elegant and time-honored General Administration Building on the Xuhui Campus. Twenty-two outstanding young scholars and scientists in the field of biomedical engineering from top universities and research institutions at home and abroad gathered online and offline at the 130-year-old Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), focusing on cutting-edge frontier of the field and sparking academic ideas.

Forum Opening Ceremony
Xu Xuemin, Deputy Director of the University Council of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Director of the National Engineering Research Center for High-End Medical Imaging Equipment (Magnetic Resonance Diagnosis and Treatment), along with 24 college leaders, senior professors, and core teachers including Dean Liao Hong'en, Party Secretary Kong Lingti, Vice Deans Ye Jian, Gu Bobo, Wei Hongjiang of the School of Biomedical Engineering, and Gao Weiqiang, Director of the Med-X Research Institute, attended the forum on-site. Faculty, students, and postdoctoral fellows of the school participated online. The opening ceremony was hosted by Liao Hong'en.

Dean Liao Hong'en Presided Over the Meeting and Delivered a Report on the School's Development
At the opening ceremony, on behalf of the school, Dean Liao first extended a warm welcome to the 22 invited young scholars from home and abroad, as well as the faculty and students of the school, and expressed sincere gratitude to the senior experts attending on-site. He gave a detailed introduction to the current development of the school in terms of school scale, discipline construction, faculty team, scientific research strength, talent training, academic philosophy, strategic planning, and other aspects. He pointed out that the School of Biomedical Engineering adheres to the school-running philosophy of "Biomedical-Engineering Interdisciplinarity, Internationalization, and Innovation-Translation", and is promoting high-quality discipline construction with the spirit of "Daring to Be Pioneers and Striving for Excellence". It strives to build an organized scientific research environment and form a harmonious atmosphere of "everyone contributes to building a first-class discipline". With the joint efforts of all, the school forges ahead with determination and maintains a strong development momentum. The school will, as always, attach great importance to the introduction and cultivation of young talents, and sincerely invites all young scholars to fully communicate with the faculty and students of the school through this forum to enhance mutual understanding.

Academic Reports by Young Scholars and On-site Exchanges
Twenty-two young scientists from renowned universities at home and abroad, such as Harvard Medical School, University of Oxford, University College London (UCL), National University of Singapore (NUS), Tsinghua University, Cornell University, and King's College London (KCL), delivered wonderful academic reports focusing on research fields including smart diagnosis and treatment, biomedical instruments, nanomedicine, molecular and regenerative medicine, integrated magnetic resonance diagnosis and treatment, and intelligent medical imaging, and conducted in-depth exchanges and discussions with experts from the school. The forum set up two parallel sub-forums according to different academic fields. The school also organized a series of activities such as laboratory visits, exchanges, and face-to-face talks for the young scholars attending on-site, which enhanced their in-depth understanding of the school's discipline construction.

Young Scholars Visiting Laboratories
Since its establishment in 2019, the International Youth Scholars Forum on Biomedical-Engineering Interdisciplinarity has been committed to gathering young talents in the interdisciplinary fields of medicine, science, and engineering from home and abroad. Each session has received enthusiastic responses from young scholars and scientists from top universities and scientific research institutions at home and abroad, effectively promoting high-level academic dialogue. At the same time, it has built a bridge of "two-way understanding and in-depth communication" for outstanding young scholars and scientists who are interested in joining the School of Biomedical Engineering of SJTU. In the opening year of the "15th Five-Year Plan", the School of Biomedical Engineering will attract and cultivate talents with a higher-quality platform, a broader vision, and an open mind, strive to build a top national and world-class biomedical engineering discipline and faculty team, and continue to contribute the wisdom and strength of SJTU Biomedical Engineering to Healthy China!
