Prof. CHEN Yazhu is a Member of Chinese Academy of Engineering and Professor of Biomedical Engineering
Prof. Yazhu CHEN (July,1936—) graduated in Electrical Engineering from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in1962. She is an outstanding expert in the field of High-voltage Technology and Biomedical Engineering, Member of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Chair Professor of Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), Honorary Dean of Biomedical Engineering School of SJTU.
Prof. Yazhu CHEN is one of the pioneers of interdisciplinary medical engineering in China, the leader of non-invasive treatment technology. She has received numerous prizes of Science and Technology Progress awarded by the state, ministries and municipal governments, and was awarded the Meritorious Person Award for Science and Technology of Shanghai in 2020.
In her earlier years, Prof. Yazhu CHEN engaged in the field of high voltage technology, especially for the technologies of high voltage equipment insulation, over-high voltage protection and numerical computation of static electrical field etc., and achieved outstanding achievements in above areas.
In the early 1980s, she took the lead in applying emerging science and engineering technology into the field of non-invasive medical treatment and She and her team successfully developed the "Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy", which has innovated a non-surgical treatment approaching in the surgical history of urology in China. “Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL)” was developed and widely applied in clinical practice, and millions of patients have been treated successfully. The great benefits in society and economy were gained. ESWL won the First Prize of National Award for Science and Technology Progress in 1987.
And then a serial of super-tech biomedical instruments were developed successfully again, including “RF Hyperthermia System for Benign Prostate”, and so on.
Since the beginning of this century, she has created a new direction of ultrasound therapy, and proposed the concept of phased multi-mode High-intensity Focused Ultrasound therapy (HIFU). Her research group has developed the phased multi-mode focused ultrasound integrated with medical images equipment, such as MRI –PHIFU System and US-PHIFU System, which has successfully implemented clinical research and achievement transformation in gynecology, tumor and other multiple fields.
More than 60 invention patents have been authorized, and more than 450 papers have been published in domestic and overseas. She leads her team make an important contribution to the nationalization and industrialization of high-end medical devices in China.
