According to the news from Web of Science, Professor Czajkowsky Dan , the school of Biomedical Engineering, Shanghai Jiaotong University, as the first author, and Professor Richard Pleass , University of Liverpool published their new research "Fc-fusion proteins: new developments and future perspectives" .(EMBO Molecular Medicine 4, 1015 ( 2012)) became the top 1% highly cited paper in the field of clinical medicine in Web of Science in 2018.
Professor Czajkowsky and professor Zhifeng Shao 's early basic research on the structure of IgM immune proteins (PNAS 106: 14960, 2009) is one of the important foundations efforts of this article. Professor Zhifeng Shao and Professor Jun Hu from the Institute of Applied Physics, China Academy of Sciences are the co-authors of the article. .
Including this paper, their related research work is supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (11374207, 31670722, 81627801) and the Hong Kong Wang Kuancheng Education Foundation.
Since the first description in 1989 of CD4-Fc-fusion antagonists that inhibit human immune deficiency virus entry into T cells, Fc-fusion proteins have been intensely investigated for their effectiveness to curb a range of pathologies. These promising outcomes have stimulated the development of novel approaches to improve their efficacy and safety, while also broadening their clinical remit to other uses such as vaccines and intravenous immunoglobulin therapy.
In this article, they discuss recent results and more generally applicable strategies to improve Fc-fusion proteins for each application, with particular attention to the newer, less charted areas.
