Elsevier officially released its list of highly cited researchers in 2019 on May 7. 2163 domestic researchers from 242 universities/research institutions/enterprises were selected.

Four researchers in various field from school of Biomedical Engineering, Shanghai Jiaotong University were selected into the list of highly cited researchers in China in 2019.

Elsevier's list of highly cited researchers in China is based on Scopus database (the world’s leading abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature). Scopus has more than 24 thousand journals from 5000+ publishers worldwide (including 730+ journals from Chinese mainland), about 9800 thousand academic conference papers, 220 thousand books, and 44 million pieces of patents information from the world's 5 largest patent institutions. Scopus can be traced back to 1823, covering various disciplines such as natural science, technology, engineering, medicine, social science, art, humanity, etc.

The selection criteria of highly cited researchers are objective and unified: academic influence only. It has been an index of the high-end talent module in the Chinese Universities ranking of soft science.
