Engineering Research Center of Digital Medicine and Clinical Translation, Ministry of Education of China
March 08, 2021
Engineering Research Center of Digital Medicine and Clinical Translation, Ministry of Education (ERCDMCT) is the first national center that focuses on innovative translational research and development of digital medicine, which was approved and passed the inspection by Ministry of Education in 2006 and 2011, respectively.
Engineering Research Center of Digital Medicine and Clinical Translation, Ministry of Education (DMCT) is developed based on the School of Biomedical Engineering of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. DMCT was approved by the Ministry of Education in 2006 and established in 2011. It is the first domestic engineering research center focusing on “digital medicine”. With the development of digital medicine and clinical translation as the core construction goals of the platform, DMCT focuses on actual clinical and patient needs, technological development and technological innovation. DMCT plays the role as bridge between scientific research and clinical translation, and promotes the independent innovation of Chinese high-end medical device products and novel medical equipment.
The overall positioning of the center: The engineering research center takes the national strategic needs as the main goal, takes digital medical technology innovation as the key core, and continuously provides the society with clinically translated research results, and promotes the cross-development between biomedical engineering disciplines and clinical disciplines. DMCT develops into a digital medical clinical translational research platform integrating services, education/training, scientific research, and clinical translation. On the basis of the existing platform, DMCT carries out the needs of digital medicine clinical translational research for clinical treatment, enterprise development, and university research.
There are five major research platforms:
(1) Digital 3D printing research and clinical translation;
(2) Digital clinical technology and clinical translation;
(3) Digital medical imaging technology and clinical translation;
(4) Biomechanics research and clinical translation in the musculoskeletal system;
(5) Basic medical research and clinical translation
DMCT has an engineering center headquarters covering an area of about 3,290 square meters. It is affiliated with School of Biomedical Engineering; MED-X Research Institute; Institute of Biomedical Manufacturing and Life Quality Engineering, National Mold CAD Engineering Research Center, medical school and affiliated hospitals, Shanghai Jiao tong University. The clinical and laboratory bases of the Ninth People's Hospital of Orthopedics, Stomatology, and Rehabilitation Department have jointly formed a digital medical industry-university-research integrated platform with complementary advantages and resource sharing.
The center vigorously develops scientific research cooperation with first-class research institutions domestically and abroad, including the University of Toronto; University of Montreal; Chiba University, Wayne State University, The University of Western Australia, Leiden University, Leeds University, etc., and successively received scientific research funds from the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Shanghai Municipal Government for international cooperation projects. Since 2007, the Engineering Research Center has successfully held thirteen consecutive International Orthopedic Frontier Technologies and Clinical Translation Conferences, actively promoting the research of translational medicine in our country, and promoting the rapid translation of digital medical research results into clinical applications.
The founder of DMCT is Prof. Kerong Dai, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, a tenured professor of the Ninth People's Hospital Affiliated to School of Medicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Director of Shanghai Joint Surgery Clinical Medicine Center, Director of Bone and Joint Institute of School of Medicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, former Director of DMCT and Director of 3D Printing Technology Clinical Translation Research and Development Center, Institute of Translational Medicine Stem Cell Director of the Transformation Base with Regenerative Medicine.
The current director of DMCT is Professor Cheng-Kung Cheng, the Chair Professor of the School of Biomedical Engineering, Shanghai Jiaotong University (2020.02.01-), and he was a distinguished professor of Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics and a distinguished chair professor of National Yangming University in Taiwan. Prof Cheng currently is serving as the president-elect of the World Association of Chinese Biomedical Engineers (WACBE), the executive editor of the newly created journal Medicine in Novel Technology and Devices, the associate editor and editorial board member of Medical Engineering and Physics, and other Chinese journals such as Medical Biomechanics. He also served as the president of the Chinese Speaking Orthopaedic Society, and academic positions in the international SCI journal Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Research. Professor Cheng's research results are mainly in the innovation, development, and translation of orthopedic biomechanics and orthopedic equipment. Professor Cheng has been awarded the Fellowship of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE, 2017), the Distinguished Alumni Award of the School of Engineering, Iowa University (2016), China Outstanding Overseas Contribution Award in Orthopedic Branch of the Medical Association (2016).
