The Institute of Medical Robotics (IMR) in Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) is an multidisciplinary platform established by SJTU in 2017. The IMR, supporting the national strategy of “Healthy China”, is committed to international collaboration and cutting-edge research for meeting the medical needs and general well-being of people at large. Focusing on intelligent, precise, minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment robotic technologies for major diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular, and stroke, the IMR carries out basic, applied, translational and clinical research on medical robotics. It synergistically integrates different disciplines such as Biomedical Engineering, Mechanics, Electronics, Material Science, Artificial Intelligence, Control and Information Theory, as well as Biology and Medicine. It combines research, education, development, clinical trial, and industrial translation and services. The main research interests include basic science research in micro-nano systems, perception and cognition, biophotonics, smart and composite materials, as well as applied research in precision mechatronics and microfabrication, robotic vision and image guidance, bioelectronics and bioinspired and biohybrid systems, spear heading the future development of surgical robotics, rehabilitation and assistive robotics, and hospital automation and high-throughput robotics.
