National Engineering Laboratory for Additive Manufacturing of Polymer Complex Structures
March 18, 2021
The National Engineering Laboratory Medical 3D Printing Center (Branch) of Polymer Complex Structure Additive Manufacturing was established by the medical engineering team of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the Ninth People's Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine under the leadership of Academician DAI, Kerong. The center is clinically demand-oriented, rapid realization of clinical transformation as its purpose, adhering to the medical concepts of digitalization, individualization, precision, and networking, based on 3D printing technology for orthopedics, stomatology, orthopedics, ENT, radiology, rehabilitation, Interventional Department and other departments provide personalized, innovative medical device design, manufacturing, and performance evaluation services.
The research center has nearly 20 sets of advanced polymer, metal, ceramic, and biological 3D printing equipment. It has built a 3D printing consultation center, research, and development laboratory, remote consultation, and maker exchange activity room, with domestic first-class hardware and software conditions.
Under the support of the research center platform, the 3D printing technology integration and clinical application of personalized hard tissue reconstruction devices have been supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology's 13th Five-Year National Key R&D Program in 2016, 2017, and 2018. The team of Academician DAI, Kerong, and Professor Yongqiang Hao won the first prize of Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award in 2018 and the first prize of China Industry-University-Research Cooperation Innovation Achievement Award for the “Key Techniques for Precise Resection of Pelvic Tumor and Personalized Functional Reconstruction” based on 3D printing technology.
The center successfully solves the clinically complicated and difficult hard tissue defect treatment based on the trinity model of 3D printing model, guide plate and implant, especially the limb salvage reconstruction of bone tumor patients, which benefits the patients and raises the level of personalized orthopedics treatment in my country to the international level. Leading level. At the same time, the center actively promotes personalized medicine concepts and 3D printing technology to the whole country and establishes the National Hospital Alliance of Medical 3D Printing Innovation Research Center. Currently, there are 23 sub-center units covering 14 provinces and autonomous regions across the country. In terms of international exchanges, it has established cooperative relationships with experts and scholars from the Institute of Orthopedics, Harvard Medical School, National University of Singapore, University of Macau, the University of Leuven in Belgium, etc. to jointly promote the advancement of medical 3D printing technology and clinical translational applications.
The center will further strengthen the promotion and application of medical 3D printing technology, improve the mechanical construction of the Hospital Alliance of the Medical 3D Printing Innovation Research Center, and strengthen the alliance's academic and scientific research exchanges. Further, strengthen the research in the direction of biological 3D printing, and strive to win the Ministry of Education or national awards.
